Hi Gary - I think you have just managed to ask a question that has
not been asked here before. Here is my $.02 on the topic, which may
be worth exactly that. The key question is, what do you want to do
with the rod? If you want to have a rod that will distance cast, but
be comfortable to fish with, I would look at the parabolics. I think
there are some P & M's that are longer than the Young Para's that
would likely work for you. The Young Para's are no slouches, however,
if the shorter length is OK.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for a a piece of exercise
equipment, and just want to cast as far as you can regardless of
comfort, I would suggest a long, fairly straight, fast taper.
Having seen your casting video, I think you are well aware of what I
am about to say, but for the benefit of others, distance casting is
mostly about form and timing, and a person of modest strength can
indeed reach out a long way. Beyond a certain point, however,
strength and body mass become factors.
My guess is the rod that you will do best with is one that is just
limber enough that you can turn over the tip with crisp control, but
stiff enough that you can just bend it to the handgrasp using
everything you've got. I don't know of any tapers like that in a 5
weight, but some of the Gillum salmon tapers seem like that in
heavier weights.
If I were drawing something up, I think I would want a drop in taper
at the tip, and then a fairly straight run to the butt. I would
think .0031/.0032 per inch taper, and semi hollow build anything over
8 feet. All pure speculation. Anyone else?
