With the wife out of the city, and the Downer bicycle race won't be till 4 PM, I took off to Rochester this AM at 6. The water was about the same as last week and still a light cafe-au-lait. Does it ever clear up? There was much carp activity around the dam and up river - swimming in groups, jumping, surfacing and showing dorsals and tails. They were obviously too busy to feed. I was determined to catch at least one. At the the further end of the dam I got three between 5 to 8 pounds. They all seem about that size. I used white, grey, black and brown flies. I don't think there was any uniform preference. (Dave, still looking forward to my 30 pounder).
Last evening I was by the dam in Esterbrook. Erik of Lacky's told me to try the further horse-shoe area. This location was embarassingly filthy. I turned toward the right (west) branch of the river and had a healthy hit by a small mouth on my - er - large black fly shaped like a large olive pit. After the bass the fly started to come apart, showing a thick flat black plastic thread uncoiling. Must admit I've used it last summer as well.
Off to Singapore in late Aug for a nephew's wedding and will bring my rod to try the reservoir there. In Singapore I do not have to prove I can cast and chew gum at the same time since gum is banned.
